June 20 - 30, 2026
Nine Scouts and four leaders from Troop 69 traveled to California for the trip of a lifetime. Base camp was Camp Hi Sierra in Longbarn, where the troop kicked things off with a bracing polar bear swim before taking on the Clavey: an 8.5-mile hike climbing 1,500 feet, a night under the stars, and the trek back the next morning. Because every single Scout made it, the troop earned the right to hang their sign on the Clavey shack at camp, joining just two dozen others and becoming the first troop to do it in a long while.
From the mountains, the troop headed to the coast: the wharf and beach at Monterey Bay, the rides and arcades of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a drive through San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge, and an afternoon exploring Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf.
They ate well, too. The camp meals were the best they'd ever had, fantastic Chinese food in Salinas, Mexican food in Seaside, In-N-Out at every possible opportunity, and clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls at Boudin in San Francisco.
From sea level to over 5,000 feet, it was ten days of new experiences these Scouts won't forget. Troop 69 normally camps closer to home in Florida, which made this cross-country adventure a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
